This is the end of my second school year, and the feeling’s stronger than ever.  We are family.  Shonese, who had to drop out of GMC last year at this time, will walk today.  She overcame so much adversity and returned this year to graduate and even win awards in Read 180 and earn three college credits from Ivy Tech.   Get ready, World.  Here comes Shonese.

I am an English teacher at Gary Middle College.  We are a second-chance high school.  Our students are driven.  They may have families and jobs, but they CHOOSE to come to our school everyday to get that long-deferred high school diploma.  Let me tell you about one of our students, John E. Beard III.

Mr. Velasco, High School Government and AP History teacher in his second year of the Teach for America program, is highly involved with the 21st Century Charter School @ Gary Community.  Next school year, Mr. Velasco will transition to a mentor teacher role at 21st Century Charter School at Gary.  In addition to teaching AP classes, Mr. Velasco started the National Honor Society Chapter at 21c along with another Teach for America teacher, Mr. Swanson.  Mr. Velasco also heads one of 21c’s most active clubs – the Anime Club! The Anime Club meets weekly, where members learn Japanese (Mr. Velasco speaks Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese), draw and read manga series, and view anime films.

Cozell and Damon Thomas sat on the bleachers in the 21st Century Charter School gym and joined the sea of applause for the school's 31 graduating seniors, including their daughter Devan.  The Gary school called the May 14 event "signing day." It's a celebration because all 31 seniors in the Class of 2015 have been accepted to college, many with dual credits.
