Dozens of people came out to support an eighth charter school in the city. The 21st Century Charter School, 556 Washington St. near downtown Gary, has a proposal before the Office of Charter Schools at Ball State University to open Gary Middle College next fall. The university hosted a public hearing Tuesday night. Ball State President Jo Ann Gora will make a decision Dec. 13 whether to grant the charter.

Two new charter schools in Northwest Indiana, Discovery Charter in Porter, and the Hammond Academy of Science and Technology in Hammond, have gotten off to a great start, principals say. Located in the shadow of the Indiana Dunes, Discovery Charter uses the environment as its playground, including a trail students explore as part of their schoolwork.

I took a little break Friday to attend a bi-monthly luncheon sponsored by the GEO Foundation For School Choice. It was a very informal event, but while there I got the chance to reconnect with one of my former students.

Nine Indiana schools and school corporations were recognized by Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett in his Statehouse office this morning. Using new data from the Indiana Growth Model, these schools and corporations were selected for this honor because a large percentage of their students achieved high academic growth in both Mathematics and English/Language Arts during the 2009-2010 school year.
