Baton Rouge charter school gets new life

A plan for new management at an otherwise doomed Baton Rouge charter school won easy approval Tuesday from the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The school in jeopardy, Baton Rouge Charter Academy at Mid City, appeared done in December when BESE voted to close the school amid dismal student performance.

An Indianapolis-based charter school group that runs an elementary school in Baton Rouge is coming to the rescue of a larger but lower-performing charter school in town that, unless something changes soon, will close in May.  The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education isscheduled to consider a proposal at its Tuesday meeting from GEO Prep Academy to take over Baton Rouge Charter Academy at Mid City.

21st Century's Johnell Davis

GARY — Rodney Williams and Ricky Haskins were talking about the starting lineup for their 21st Century boys basketball team right before sectionals began a couple weeks ago.
The subject of freshman guard Johnell Davis — a fresh-faced 15-year-old — came up. Haskins, an assistant coach, brought up the idea of not starting the lad and bringing him off the bench with all the looming postseason pressure.

American high schools don't seem to be working in the real world. As a dad, I'm part of the problem. I remember what it was like when I went to high school, and now that I have kids in high school, I'm looking for something that resembles what I experienced. I’m guessing I’m not alone. But this approach is actually misguided.

BOURBON – No matter how hard second-ranked Tri-County fought to make a comeback stick after trailing by double-digits early Saturday morning, Gary 21st Century Charter always had an answer in a 69-57 loss in the Class A Triton Regional semifinals.  Tri-County (23-3) erased a 14-point first half deficit to take the lead on four different occasions in the second half, only see 21st Century quickly snatch the lead right back  in a physical game.
